I bought this bead on the market, in Cameroun, on 2005/2006. I knew, it was not a real venetian antique chevron, but I had never seen a such bead: it is not like the fake beads which I saw from India, Java or China. Somebody said to me, it was a Luigi Catelan Bead. I don't know very well the american modern beads. Is somebody to explain me what is this bead? I'm going to send to you different views of this bead. Thanks at all!

Thanks for your answer,
You think really so? I have many chevron from 1600 to 1900... and I have never seen this kind of bead. It is different. I want to believe you, but I am not sure or it is very rare. it is not the same material. The glass is not the same than the other beads from 1900.
Yes, I believed it as you, a moment, because this bead is very very well made but....why it looks so different???? that is the mystery!!!
Tomorrow I will send you pics of green chevron ( 1900....) to see the difference.

the link is to a page that has several similar beads from the Picard site, the Picard Chevron book shows more.....the thing that may throw this bead off is the grind, it is a bit more dramatic than the typical grind for these and it could appear newer to some observers but I think it is original and has very minimal wear. I have several similar on a strand but no picture at the moment.

thanks Tasart,
Yes, I have such green chevron, but you can read the comment of Napoleone. I think it's a good explanation. You can see that the top of my bead has a very different cut from traditional green chevron. Your pic is very good to see the difference.

That is how the bead looked since it was made in the early 20th c.....now, almost a century later, I had grinding king Alan Curtis regrind that bead for me. I posted it recently but here it is again to show the before and after. Also on this strand are two of the gorgeous uncirculated red Zens, like those shown by JP recently, and two wonderful "spool" grinds of 1920s red rosetta cane by Uwe.

That image above posted by Thomas is my 2007 "Tucson Handful"...including an applecore grind of early 20th c. standard red-white-blue rosetta cane by Alan Curtis, a lovely subtle pink Art Seymour chevron, a neat orange-yellow-black Luigi Cattelan chevron, and turquoise Luigi elbow chevron with Mario Cavignes applied lampwork. All accompanied by our much loved, late Uncle Russ beads, commissioned as a surprise by his Rings and Things staff and made in Peru, via Jeff Pines, JP Imports.

I think it is a Venetian cane cut in India. As far as I know in the 90's chevron canes from the old stock of the Società Veneziana per l'Industria delle Conterie (the biggest bead producer of Venetian beads in XX century, which just ended up in those years) was sent to India to be cut; these Indovenetian chevrons haven't rounded extremities but piramidal as those of XVI century, probably because are more easily done. About 20 years ago I found one similar to that in the picture in a stock of new Indian beads in Milan: it was a classic 6 layers in blue, red and white colours. If I'm able to find it I'll post a picture (I'm preparing a small exhibit and my collection room is not exactly in order).

Thanks Napoleone,
I think, it would be a good explanation, because, this bead is actually not cut as the others. That was the question for me. I have never seen this kind of bead with this cut, in Africa. The edges are smooth whereas that this has a frank cutting which does not exist in the traditional trade beads which circulated in Africa. Your explanation seems to me more likely. I did not know this kind of bead, and it is the only one whom I have never found in Africa.
Thanks very much!

one more particular that makes me think of stock canes are the many holes due to air bubbles in the molten glass. The cane was possibly originally discharged due to its poor quality.

Yes, I agree with you, it's a good possibility. You say about the poor quality of the glass: perhaps, the glass is not the same, you can see that on the pic, but it does not seem of poor quality but different. Yes there are bubbles, I believed it was little holes to hold the cane because few holes are in the same places, but after your note, I see that there are bubbles elsewhere around the top of the bead.
thanks!

Thanks, Giorgio! I didn't became aware of India-made chevron-types until the late 1990s, maybe year 2000. I wanted to have a number of examples, so bought a small lot from Fire Mountain, maybe 4 ounces. These are what I kept. The red-white-blue rosetta slices that you see in the picture with the rest of the obviously Indian beads were indeed in that lot! All 5 slices are from slumped cane and have worm holes. Not having any idea that they (in India) had gotten hold of Conterie cane, I was mystified, and finally you shed light on that for me. Thank you! (My label on the baggie of the slices: "India per Fire Mtn...???!")

They are Venetian from Luigi Cattelan , We got the same beads from him in Tuscon around 10 years ago.
He had quite a few available at that time along with many other types.
Check in Murano with Luigi to confirm it

This is a picture of the chevron I bought in Milan in early nineties. This is surely a Venetian cane; the piramidal end cut is difficult to show as the edges were smoothed, possibly thumbled. This was among hundred thousands beads just arrived from India.

Your bead is a Luigi bead pulled sometime between 1992-1994 to Reproduce the look of the old Venetian beads. This was a commission job done for a reputable African Trader. However, when it came time to pay for the product Luigi was stuck with a quantity of these beads that could not be paid for. At that time he associated his name with them to recoup his looses. These beads are still on the open market. You can buy them for around $30.00 ea . I am quite interested in what napoleone knows about Conterie canes being cut in India. Please elaborate.

There isn't too much I can further explain. In Murano there are artists making the strangest things with glass, often just to experiment or for fun, or on demand. If I would have found that chevron in Murano it wouldn't be strange to me. What excited my curiosity was finding it among Indian beads. So, when I showed my strange chevron in Murano (the same in my picture), I was told that it should have been made from some stock canes that were sent to India in recent years, and that was the reason because I had found among Indian beads a chevron with piramidal ends from XX century Venetian canes.

I don't know whether it is the same; mine has as extremity a pyramid with six faces, with rounded edges; it is difficult ( at least for my poor skills as a photographer) to clearly show the faces.

Seeing one out of context and dirty added to uncertainty for me, for sure. But, if Luigi pulled the cane himself, he certainly did match the 1920s version very closely!
