I've been looking for a working link to the Sick collection photos at the Tropenmuseum, or anywhere else for that matter. I found a couple links in past discussions including the one below, but they don't seem to be working. I sure wish they were available. I've never been able to view the full size photos, and was hoping that would change with this new computer.

Picard pages of the Sick Collection... are there more?

OK, yes, the Picards have many of the Sick Collection pages shown on their website.

My confusion lies with the fact I've seen the pages at the Tropenmuseum website, but my memory is of more pages than I see on the Picard site.

Are the pages shown by the Picards the same pages found at the Tropenmuseum?

What is the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium. Same as Tropenmuseum or different?

The last page file on the CD is numbered 197, so I guess it's 197 pages. These are the actual sample cards in the Sick collection, not just the 49 pages of the Sick catalog.

You sound like you have the CD, Bediste.

Yes, I have small copies of the Tropenmuseum photos in my old computer. There are 197 bead cards there. Lots of lovely European style fancies included.

Yes, I wish to see larger versions of the 197 pages. The website seems to be down.

Will the CD ever be available? Could someone help me get a copy? thanks a bundle.

Not to discourage you...

but beginning last year I tried to get a copy from the Tropenmuseum and talked and mailed with one of the staff. There was no intention to republish it and nothing was left in stock. I tried to convince them though pleading there is interest in the beadworld.
Some days later I received a mail I could have the copy that was in their office!! A few days later I could not believe my eyes. They indeed had sent me that copy. Lucky me!

The Afrikamuseum in Tervuren, Belgium has no links with the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. In Tervuren there is no beadcollection to my knowledge except for some ethnic jewelry.
I just phoned the bookshop in the Afrikamuseum Tervuren and they never had it for sale there.Sorry.

Online booshops in this part of Europe all are out of stock. I will check it regularly because I know quite a lot of people are interested. The moment I see or hear of any copies, new or secondhand I will leave a message on BCN.

Who knows you might end up finding a second hand one on the ebay pages. Good luck!

if they could be viewed online, that would be best

I don't need to own a copy of The Bead Goes On if the bead cards were viewable online.

If someone was to put them on a photo hosting website, we could all see them.

I mentioned the Africamuseum in Belgium because the Sick Co. bead catalog shown by the Picards is located there. They say it is a printed catalog, so I don't believe it is actual bead cards.

The Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam has actual beads sewn onto cards if I understand correctly. These are the 197 cards I would like to see in larger version.

Since these 197 bead cards are very important to bead researchers and collectors, it seems logical they be made viewable by as many people as possible.

I will contact the Tropenmuseum (again) to see if there is not anything that can be worked out....
If there is any progress, I will let you know.

I have been in touch with the Tropenmuseum and the author of the book, Koos van Brakel. He is also the head of collections at the museum.
He informed me that the book only had 500 copies printed, and it was sold out within days.
The good news is that the sample cards are all on their website and they can be easily found by filling in the code 3407-* in the search box. All 197 sample cards are shown.

The bad news is that for most research purposes, the resolution on these images is too low. The resolution on the DVD images is much higher, and allows you to zoom into individual beads.

I have asked mister van Brakel if he sees any possibilities for making the pictures available in higher resolution. The museum also has a professional site for researchers. I'll keep you posted.

In the mean time, for those who have never seen the full range of sample cards of the Sick & Co collection: Enjoy!

Second Update

Koos van Brakel and I have been emailing back and forth.
They do not want the images published online in high resolution. He would love to see a reprint, as he gets requests regularly. The cost of this is quite high, though. I have suggested only republishing the DVD, and he may look into that.

I have asked if it is okay for me to send people a specific image of one or more samplecards they have seen on the website of the Tropenmuseum. He does not object to that, as long as the images do not get published online or in print without explicit permission from the Tropenmuseum.

So: enjoy the sample cards on the website of the Tropenmuseum through the keyword: 3407-*
If you come across a specific card or set of cards that you would really like to see more up close, let me know and send me an e-mail with the number. I'll be happy to mail it to you.

Floor, thank you very much for your efforts. It is very helpful to have access to the smaller versions of the bead cards. It is still tricky to get there, but helpful now that we have a code.

The museum would be very wise to republish the CD. I know I would buy one, especially if it was more affordable than the book.

Thank you for all your efforts so far Floor.
I have tried three times and the cards do not pull up on my computer using 3407-*
Could the code be incorrect?
Thanks.

Tested it again, and it does work for me. There are two search bars on the page. One at the top, that is a general search of the Tropenmuseum website, and one in the center frame. It is the one in the center frame that you need to use, as it searches the collection. It says 'enter your search term'
Have you tried copy-paste with the code? Perhaps you are using a different symbol?

Anybody else having any difficulties?

Dates

The dates on the cards range.
They are numbered according to date.

Group 1, cards 1-68 are considered to be from 1910-1913. There is some doubt with regards to some of these cards though, as some are dated later, but are still in the same range. Which they can tell from the individual beads being numbered as well as the cards. The museum numbered the cards and places them in the right order, while the company Sick & Co numbered all the beads. These numbers range from 1 to 19726.

Group 2, cards 69-150 are from 1920 to 1924

Group 3, cards 151 to 181 are from 1930-1939

Group 4, cards 182 to 188 are from 1948 into the 50's.

The last set of cards, 189-200 are all considered to be rosetta beads. They all have an R with the number if the bead. These cards range from 1910(189) to 1958 (card 200)
