"Roman Era" carnelian beads found in Yemen, strung with Mali (neolithic?, OMG!)crystal beads and filler(?)18k gold beads of Indian manufacture.

The carnelian stone is of a very deep red colour, and the holes are unusually small. Perhaps from the Middle East, not India?

The crystal is very clear, roughly finished, with conical perforations-- which have been filled with gold tiny cylinders.

The pictures below are of a necklace obtained around 1930 from Chief Tom Yallup of the Celilo Indians at Celilo Falls along Oregon's Columbia River.
It is a 28" strand made from graduated 1/4" to 1/2" shell wampum beads, beautiful 1/4" to 5/8" facetted cobalt "Russian" blues, 14 black steatite "spears" ranging from 1 1/4" to 2" in length, and an extremely rare black steatite 3 1/2" long by 1 3/4" tall drilled fish effigy pendant.
This necklace was in the collections of two former Oregon Archeological Society members until I obtained it about 10 years ago.

Jamey has correctly pointed out to me in a private e-mail that "wampum" beads were only made by Native Americans in the NE from two different shell types. Some of the wampum beads made their way to the NW through trade or other means, as I have a number of examples found in the NW.
Upon re-examination, the white beads in the Chief Tom Yallup necklace are graduated clamshell beads.
I am sorry for any confusion this posting may have generated.
Thank you Jamey for pointing out my error.

Just got these back from an exhibit--the first one won Best in Mixed Media Jewelry. Yippee!!

I made all the circlets on the first, almost everything except for 3 or 4 'chalk' beads (pale blue flat stones) on the horse necklace.

I don't sell a lot of these big 'shaman' and 'clan' necklaces, they're to make a big splash. But they're exciting to make and comfortable to wear, and I love it when people who buy them, come into my booth the next year wearing them. :^)
