This beaded piece belonged to the mother of a friend - he is 75 years old so it's at least that old, he thinks. I was thinking 1920-1930? His mother was from Nephi Utah and active in the Mormon faith. The bee motif on the piece may be related to the Mormon/LDS connection. The Mormons came to Utah in 1847. They had also traveled abroad quite a bit - Europe and India.

He's looking for insight. A local "dealer" told him it could be native American and I disagree.

This type of necklace seemed to be A Thing in the 1910s-20s - called "Apache" loom beadwork. Some of the old beadwork pamphlets and books feature it.

A very neatly done piece.

Belongs to an Etsy shop, it seems. Found it by searching for "Apache loom beadwork" - lots of other examples.

I agree.....it is likely Apache or other Southwestern tribe loom beadwork.

Super pretty necklace. The beads look like steel cuts and brass ones to match. Did Native Americans really have many steel cuts to work with? I'd first imagine this to have been made in Europe, if indeed the beads are steel cuts....

Not Native American, IMO

I agree, it's possibly an Art Deco sautoir with cut steel beads. Two examples from the 1920s-1930s:

I have more than one of these looms in their boxes with instructions- may try to send an image later in the week when i get to my workshop- the "Apache" looms were popular in the 1910s-20s and not only for "American Indian" style work, but for the elegant long pendant and fringe necklace designs- my examples have been originally made, bought and sold in London.
