Not bead-related, but a little bit of flotsam from what were some very interesting times indeed.

Guessing that the rim inscription on this cloisonne bowl said "Feng Yuxiang," not "Fung Yuk Chang," I emailed RM and he confirmed it. General Feng was a Methodist Christian, and this was a Christmas gift. To whom is now lost to history.

Feng Yuxiang lived one of those colorful and drama-filled lives that would cause most of us to melt like marshmallows.

Fung Yuk Chiang would be Feng Yuxiang Cantonese.

There was a discussion on the Asian Art Forum about mystifying characters painted on the underside of a table, which turned out to be not Mandarin, but Cantonese for something like "pay attention to the wobbly legs."

I added a correction to the blog post about the Cantonese pronunciation.
