Jewelry designers that work with ethnographic and collectable old beads will be showing. The San Francisco Tribal & Textile Show is the oldest exhibition of this kind on the West Coast. I've been in the is show for some 29 years and the displays are impressive.
You will see rare objects and textiles that are exceedingly difficult to find today shown by top specialists in many areas.

Some of you may remember Elizabeth Rieth. With discerning taste and seemingly unlimited resources, she collected many things. Having worked closely with the Rieth family for forty years, we are finally releasing the best of the Himalayan collection. The catalog image shows about half of the dZi beads. Ling, of Bonham's in San Francisco, estimated the value of just one bead at twenty to twenty five thousand U.S. dollars! Although there has been much interest, we are not releasing anything until the Tribal Arts Show preview. In addition to the dZi bead collection, there will be a great variety of loose beads and pendants suitable for designers and resale. We are motivated sellers! Hope to see you at the show,

She was an amazing woman. I met her several times and she collected a rather large selection of my beads. She was gracious and kind, very kind. I saw her in Santa Fe at a Recursos show wearing two strands of those awesome dzi beads Which would have made about 3 of that one shown in the catalog. In 95 at the Sheraton in DC she sported a strand of high carat gold pre columbian effigies. She really had an eye for the best. I am glad I got to know her a little.

Thank you, Bob! This show is a most fabulous event, I've been going most years since 2003, when I met Bob and Alyson for the first time. Anyone interested in tribal art and antiques who can get there needs to go, especially if you have never been. I understand that our friend Glenn of IndoArts will be representing another important estate collection, also. It is great that the live catalog is accessible on-line. It gives a glimpse of the beauty of this show.

I have heard that in 2016, the Tribal Arts Show may be held after Tucson, so that buyers and sellers can easily attend both events. Just Fred

Moving the SF show to dates after the Tucson shows would be a big help to many who would like to attend both events. But maybe not on the same exact weekend as the Marin Show (Art of the Americas) later in the month - remember when they tried that one year? For me, it made it very hard to fit both shows into one weekend...

Each and every turquoise bead is so wonderful. They must feel amazing to hold/touch after being worn and loved so much. Really amazing Fred! I so wish I could make this year's show,,but must plan in advance to start saving now for 2016! Lynne

Your comment about holding/touching reminds me of something I learned during my years as a student at California College of the Arts. One classroom assignment was: "Create a sculpture for a blind person." -Because there is a relationship between visual and tactile beauty... While holding and touching two thousand grams of antique Tibetan turquoise, I have been trying to teach myself how to grade them. Thomas Stricker has also provided valuable guidance. The necklace/display pictured in this thread is almost exactly one thousand grams. It will soon be taken apart so that each buyer may select one bead at a time.

great assignment. I think I have told you that I always find myself holding on to a specific bead when I wear my necklaces. The older and more worn, the better. Love how they feel in my hand, and I swear I feel empowered & calmer when I do so. I find my satisfaction with all of my beads is very often impacted by how they feel & how worn they are, which is probably not ideal for everyone, but definitely for me. Hope your show goes wonderfully. I'm sure it will be incredible. Lynne
