eBay item 261569384845 $750

VS.

Chinese item (sorry, gotta post the link)

Interestingly, the Chinese auction lists the piece as "Republican cloisonne necklace agate" and wants Y12,000 or about $1960 for the piece.

At first I thought they were different, but closer examination seems to indicate they're the same necklace.

It's sort of like those "spot the difference" cartoons in the Sunday paper. The pendant looks different to me but maybe it has been turned over or there were thousands for these cranked out and sold to the via the good ol' Friendship Stores in the 70s and 80s.

Oddly, I have yet to see a verifiable Friendship Store necklace of this type

The Friendship Store pieces seem pretty much average work, of matched floral beads in simple patterns. For undiscriminating foreigners.

Chinese Friendship stores have been around since the 1950s and actually the quality of merchandise was quite good until the economy started to pick up in the early 90s and it became difficult to find people who wanted to do this kind of craftsmanship for little money. The Yue Hwa Stores (a proxy outlet for them) in Hong Kong for many years were considered synonymous with quality. The cloisonné is quite good but the carved agate pendant seems average. Anyway who knows?

Compared to European cameo work, all Chinese carved carnelian pendants are average?

I would, of course, like to see an exception to that generalization.

But if jade is your main stone, it's hard to see how the best carvers would work on something viewed as lesser material.

Typical average Qing carnelian pendants. See links.
