I received an inquiry about a strand of these beads I have on offer, and referred him to Augusto Panini's website -

Also mentioned that the term "French Ambassador" was a misnomer, from a mistaken belief that these beads were used in the North American fur trade.

But is that correct? Does anyone remember any of this lore, or am I going to have to do a trawl through the archives?

The story as I recall is that the beads were reportedly from the French Ambassador to a chief in Africa. All hokey of course. But useful for sellers and buyers to identify certain beads.

I have four "French Ambassador" beads that were found at Columbia River (Oregon) Native American village sites. They were found in the 1940's.
So.....they were definitely used in the North American fur trade.

Not so-called "Lewis & Clarke" beads.

Those pictured are exactly like the four "French Ambassadors" I have from the Columbia River.
The commonly referred to "Lewis & Clark" beads are also found there, but have no real association To the explorers named Lewis and Clark.
