Hi Shinji,
It certainly is a beautiful bead. But these colors of brown and orange seem unusual to me.
What are the clues which have led you to believe that this rolled pad bead is ancient?
Is the aperture even or different in size from one side of the opening to the other?
I mean, is the hole tapered?
Frederick
Hi Fred
Mosaic,Color,Wear...everything is saying "I'm an ancient bead." to me.
There's no doubt and there's no options for me in this point.
Red is not orange in fact,
I agree it's a little bit different from ancient Indian red(brown red).
But I think it's cupper red also including some other materials to make red.
The part of mosaic(surface) looks like rolled-pad,
But I'm not sure that the bead itself was made by "rolled-pad" method and I wonder if the mosaic plate may be rolled and fused on pre-made big semi translucent bead....???
The size of hole is almost same from an end to another end.

Shinji,
As noted by me on many occasions, it is very possible that a rolled-pad bead might be a mosaic-glass pad, rolled around a base. And the resulting bead could easily be a spheroidal construction.
This is not a mystery. Jamey
I tried to find same kind of ancient red in my collection.
The red used in roman mosaic beads is similar.
It's also posibble that the real color is little bit defferent from the color you saw in your monitor.
Actually when I see the picture here, the red color of beads in my monitor is more bright than the real color of beads .
Shinji
Shinji,
What is your expert opinion
concerning size, surface texture,
and stylistic comparisons between your
sold bead and the classic ancient beads ?
Frederick
Hi Fred
Sorry to be late to reply.
And sorry taht I don't understand the word "stylistic comparison".
(Is it about style or design???)
The size of "D:2.4cm H:2.0cm" is huge, comparerd to roman beads of standard size.
The size of "D:2.4cm H:2.0cm" is rare in roman era and can be seen more often in islamic era.
This is just an idea from my poor experience.
Speaking to surface texture, sold one has natural wear (intact), on the other hand some roman mosaic beads in my post are polished after excavation.
I'm sure about this point.
