Hello!
A different festival/region, a different thread.

Please feel free to enjoy the photos, and share your thoughts on what you are see

Please also bear in mind what I have gathered from reading as much as I can find about these costumes. I am not certain on the identities of the beads, I think you all can help me with that - but I am certain about the background of these photos. These are not mass produced pieces of plastic put on by people paid to entertain a busload of tourists.

These photos are taken at exhibitions in the most major Tibetan festivals in their respective region. The festivals are put on by Tibetans for Tibetans, they are at most frequent annual (Litang and Yush). This festival in Dege appears to be less than annual, and the last time it was held was when these photos were taken (no later than 2004).

The festivals are usually three to five day festivals, Tibetans come from far and wide to attend them. The main events are usually horse races. These ceremonial costumes shows are a major sub-event, as are dances, and religious ceremonies.

Tibetans attending these festivals wear their finest robes and jewelry. Tragically, that used to include Tiger Skins and Leopard Skins until 2006 when the Dalai Lama implored Tibetans to stop. This festival was in 2004. You will see some Leopard and Tiger Skins, I am sorry if that upsets you. It upsets me. But at least the practice of selling and wearing these skins, from what I read, is mostly over now, certainly massively reduced.

Now, for the beads and jewelry. Tibetans come to these festival in their finest clothes and jewelry, but these photos are not the normal festival-goers - they are a specially organised group by wealthy families from many regions, chosen because they the best costumes in their respective region (The participants hold up signs with the names of their village/town). Often, many members of a wealthy family pool their best ornaments, and elect one person (usually the most pretty/handsome daughter/son) to be decked out in all of it.

Whether the coral and dzis are ancient or modern, real or authentic, and whether the gold is solid or plated, I leave to everyone to discuss.

I will try and post as many bead closeups as I can find :)

Best wishes

Porshiebo

To me, these images seem to be SO ostentatious, such a caricature of what dressing up should be, that they seem like a Disney version of reality.
but people even here in UK always did overdo it dress-wise going to horse races...
now if only someone had worn those loaves of fossilized tree-resin on their head to the royal wedding here...

Yes different strokes for different folks :)

The guidelines for these dresses is clearly is the bigger the better, the most expensive the better. There is a cultural reason behind all this ostentatiousness. Jewelry is the storehouse of the wealth of Tibetans in these regions, because they are nomadic. And I have asked a couple of Tibetans online what they think of these costumes, the gist of what they said is that they think it's beautiful, though clearly showing off by a very small and very wealthy elite

and there are some great beads, but all I can think of is 'nouveau riche'. All silver got replaced by gold.... the bigger the better it seems. Where is the soul?
Just a very personal note.

I know what you mean. Although the ornaments may be new, the culture of the very rich traders in Tibetan owning and wearing massive amounts of jewels goes back centuries. Apparently wearing vast amounts of jewels used by be a daily thing for some wives, whereas now these volumes of jewels are only work one or two festival days a year, plus on the wedding day

Remember that these people are from a traditionally nomadic culture, for centuries they have put the majority of their wealth in jewelry, the most suitable (portable) thing they could invest in for their mobile lifestyle

I have to say I am speechless at the display - the intensity and sheer weight of all that decoration. While I am skeptical that it all is antique, I am still very impressed by the visuals and just enjoyed seeing some videos.

The huge peachy coral beads are probably not very old, but I believe are genuine. I've seen kilos and kilos of these peachy coral beads with our African trader friends - and their best customers for coral for years were Tibetans here in the U.S.

Joyce I agree with you,@most of it is definitely not antique, though as I said before I believe they are luxury items made of valuable undyed coral, real dzi, solid gold etc.

Of course I'm sure some antique items do exist in those pictures - I think it varies by person to person and from place to place - but the majority is probably stuff acquired over the last few decades - since China started economic free market reforms.

Just like in other regions of China, some Tibet traders and entrepreneurs have managed to make small or large fortunes. I haven't researched this thoroughly, but my impression is that 0.01 and 0.1% of families have become very wealthy - enough to buy these costumes - through business, these people I am sure have had to demonstrate some loyalty to the Chinese communist party and play the CCP's game. Then I guess maybe two or three percent of Tibetans might be at a middle class level comparable to westerners - with university educations, working as professionals or running small business. And the rest are poorer with more than half still live in pretty harsh poverty, enduring daily hardship for a dollar or two a day.

Also, something important is that most of these festivals do NOT occur in the "Tibetan Autonomous Region" (which is only 50% of "pre-1959" Tibet. They occur in the parts of that were integrated into Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan provinces, which have historically had far better treatment and less interference from the government, have had far less Chinese immigration (many towns are 97% or more Tibetan people - compare that to Lhasa which is now less than 50% Tibetan people), and consistently named the places where Tibetan culture is best preserved.

Sadly things have taken a turn for the worst since the 2008 protests around Tibet, there are crackdowns happening in varies towns such as Aba - the stage of the festival in the first thread I posted. It had a history of being very free and autonomous with very little government/security force presence. But since 2008 riots have happened, many people have died, been tortured etc. and several of the monastery who campaign for Tibetan succession are currently under seige. A very scary situation with a real threat of escalation
