I have an old clear glass necklace that I am restringing, and am very puzzled by the bead holes - I am hoping someone can explain.

The beads are clear faceted cubes and the bead holes look like they have been drilled from one side because the hole is very much larger on one side than the other, the hole is conical. They are glass not rock crystal. Hopefully two photos are attached.

I've never seen glass beads like this before - please can someone explain the why where and when

Thank you

Hi Chris,
Your beads have tapered holes due to the method of manufacture. They were molded from glass using tongs with a tapered pin to form the hole. The taper allows the pin to be easily released. I'm sure some other will jump in here and explain more. Floor has some pictures of the old tongs used to make glass beads for example.

Many thanks - that makes sense. Sounds a slow way of making beads!

Very time consuming indeed, this method. The glass has to be heated, pushed into shape in a mold and pierced, then the bits sticking out of the mold have to be removed. After that, they are roughly polished, then facetted against a wheel, and then polished again.

Currently, they use the same method, but the pressing itself is not done with the pliers anymore. They have machines who can do this quicker, and can be operated by one man.
