Today's flea market find

The seller told me he travels a lot, and that these were real Tibetan coral and turquoise, and that the dark brown wheel-shaped bead with a crackle finish is really old amber. I just liked the beads, and hoping against hope they are real "something". I suspect the dark brown one might be wood.

The coral pieces were in a separate bag. The red on the smooth pieces is only on the surface, white underneath. But I still like them very much.

On another note, he had a large deep blue glass bead that he said was "cobalt", about 1/2"x3" that I thought looked like a 2-layered cane, the blue glass with a hint of translucence. The cane/bead had a good-sized hole, maybe 2-3mm if I remember correctly, and the cross-section profile was sort of square with smoothed corners. Almost satiny surface.

If I had to guess (and as you know, I am the least scholarly member of BCN), it almost looked like a cane section for Russian blue beads. I should have taken a picture, but I did give him the url for this forum and suggested he take a pic of the bead and ask if anyone knew what it was.

Nowadays, when something is called 'Tibetan', it usually looks so obviously fake. (Not here on the forum, I mean!)

One of the coral branches is wonderful, looks like a strand of old coral I bought last year. (Well. HALF a strand, I couldn't afford the whole thing and another buyer offered to split it with me.) I figured the coral alone was worth the price of $10 for the lot. I've already used some of the turquoise and the yellow amber.

Very nice necklace Luanne. I might partly disagree with Stefany:the Coral branches, yes that looks Moroccan, but the turquoise might come from Asia. There is no turquoise used in Moroccan jewelry and I can't recall having been able to buy some there unless it was incorportated in imported jewelry from India, Yemen, Pakistan....
The amber,as well as the Coral bead on the right of your necklace could also be Asian....but could also be Mediterranean.

Found it while looking through the BCN galleries.
So....did I pass up a bargain? I think the guy wanted $20 for it.

$20 seems like a steal. I would think each bead is worth $20-$40.

That price was for one bead on a badly made necklace with other beads that were pure de trash.

But if I see the guy, I'll snag it. Thanks, Matt!
