Quick trip to Jablonec

Spent 3 days in Jablonec and the surrounding area to donate my books to some people, buy more sample cards and generally enjoy the glass and bead culture.

Generally, the bead industry is still in decline, or so it seems from shops closing. Still plenty of interesting stuff to see.

We went to Desna, about 6 miles from Jablonec, and home to the old Riedel factory (now Preciosa) where for example the first Czech uranium glass was produced.

Along a path in the woods we found interesting bits of glass and beads in a pile. They have probably been there for decades. The man who lived at the end of the path saw us and started giving what wat probably a very interesting lecture on the history of local glassmaking. My lack of Czech language skills made it so that I understood very little. Basically: First, Riedel made his factory, and there were were many businesses. Everything was busy, and there were chimneys everywhere. Then came the war, and then came the communists. All the glass people left. And now, it is all gone.

And that, dear friends of BCN, is the history of Czech glass in a nutshell.

An end piece of cane fro striped yellow seed beads, half finished pressed buttons, lampwork rods, pressing glass rods, and other bits and pieces.

The cane of hexagonal green glass interests me. A long shot, but wondering if it might be used for making 'Russian Blue' beads, but then in green. Anyone seen these beads in this color?
It could also be a decorative piece for a lamp, or who knows what....

Another 6 miles further down the road is Harrachov, where a glass factory has veen running since the 1700's.
Now, they make handblown glass, in a production line, and they make decorative cut glass.

The museum of glass and bijouterie in Jablonec has somewhat changed it's exhibit, so there are some interesting new things to see.

A long piece of beadwork from fairly large drawn cut beads. The Germans call these 'Sprengperlen'.

Intricate beadwork with incredibly tiny beads.

Albert Sachse was a major exporter of beads, and it is the first time that I have seen these pieces by his company. Why they are remarkable to me, is that they were specifically designed for export to the Pacific. The designs show glass shells, Prosser beads, large imitation coral beads and an interesting stringing style.

I still have to photograph my more interesting finds, like a Prosser sample card, glass miniature Qurans with an image of Muhammed on there, old WWII items, etc.

Most of the times I have been to Jablonec, I went by train or by plane. This time, my parents joined us and we were by car. Lucky for me, this was the trip when I found a big foot operated stringing device. They are used to make the hanks of seed beads. I brought it home with me, and it actually works! Now way I could have taken that on the train..... This picture if from the museum, showing one.

And ofcourse.....there were sample cards!

I've noticed people are willing to pay more for strands than bags of beads. Strands just look like more beads! So whenever I'm cleaning out my studio, I wish I had time to actually string the extras.
