Can someone please help me evaluate this pendant? I bought it some time ago as nephrite "from the Chinese Republic era." Now I'm questioning it. What is that white material in the "carved" grooves? The piece is translucent with a light behind it, heavy, and cold to the touch. I think it's nephrite. Is it just poorly made?

The white is just where the piece of stone has been ground and not polished any. If you were to put a bit of oil in it I bet they almost disappear.

This does not look like jade to me but I have been wrong more than once.

All my best ..... Danny

Hi, They often treat jade with a by soaking it in a hot hard wax to bring out the shine and then polish it when it dries off, the white residue might be wax that is stuck in the cracks. Find a small area and try and find a not so obvious area and try and scratching it with a stainless steel blade, if it doesn't scratch it is most like nephrite jade.

Thanks, I will try that. Does serpentine scratch? Probably so . . .

I'm going down now to take a picture of the other side. It is similarly "carved" but has no white material. It could be serpentine.

I don't think it is serpentine- it is much a darker color, more like spinach jade. Here is Qing carving of a dog done in serpentine.

I would never have guessed that was serpentine!

Bowenite is also a serpentine - and it's commonly pale green or yellowish green

Yes, a jade expert some years ago said this piece might be bowenite. It is really quite gray though, hardly green at all and there certainly is no hint of yellow. The whole field of jade ID has me completely flummoxed!

I never knew that, coincidentally the dog was bought in Suzhou.
