I did business with the same person Keith in Gallup for nearly fifteen years in my early years, he had a trading company Turney’s Inc and bought nearly everything I made in cash which was great. Many times we would do a part trade.

Early on 1981 or so I spotted four Ryker trays that were filled with pre Columbian artifacts, Keith had traded the trays from a gentleman named Rex Arrowsmith, who at that time had a gallery in Santa Fe named Arrowsmith’s. When I finally got in the position to do some trading for a larger portion of our dealings I grabbed the four trays and asked Keith if he would consider trading them as part of the deal, he said yes and I finally got those wonderful trays.

Over the years I traded or sold the majority of what was in the trays, and only have one regret, I traded a ceramic Mayan figurine of a warrior that I did not realize was a whistle until some years later (wish I knew this prior to the trade), as they say hind sight is the best.

I did keep my two favorite Mayan beads and still own them to this day. I am in the process of gathering things for this years Tucson and the other day when I was talking to Thomas he told me that he was posting new bead images on his Facebook page weekly as a prelude to the show, he told me to send him some images to post so this is why I have the images you see below.

The first image is of my favorite it’s a small carved bead 32.75mm tall 12.2mm wide. I always loved this bead and we even made a rubber mold of it years ago, a friend had the mold and I think he cast a few beads but I am not sure.

The second image is of a very large bead 67.85mm long 18.8mm diameter I kept it because of the wonderful quality of lapidary work and the general good feeling the bead emanates.

If you have some pre Columbian beads lets make this a long thread.

All my best ......... Danny

Hi Danny,
Thank you for the interesting post, wish I knew more about this area! Here is a cute critter belonging to my friend Margo. She bought him in the 1970s from a woman who said she bought him in the 1940s, in Mexico - he's 18mm x 50mm and very wearable. Sorry for the crummy photos, it's hard to convey how neat he is. I wore him to the "Art of the Americas" show in our area in Feb. this year and others also thought he is quite possibly Pre-Columbian. But who knows? Your thoughts are appreciated!

Joyce,
That is indeed a cool carving but my guess is that it was carved in a much later period most likely in the 1940's.

I would love to have a few more posts on this thread. There has to be some out there that have pre Columbian beads.. JAN

All my best ....... Danny

Judy,
Thank you for posting these I plan on posting some new beads later today. Many people call these type bead spindle whorls but I am not sure they are. From images I have seem of Mayan necklaces this type bead was used in their construction. I will see if I can find some examples.

More Pre Columbian beads

I started this thread in hopes that many would post images of their pre-Columbian beads. I think many think of beads from Mexico when they see the term pre-Columbian. When I say pre-Columbian I mean all cultures of the Americas this includes anything all the way from Alaska to the tip of south America. I would like to see beads from any of these areas made prior to 1500.

Today I am posting a few images of beads from the Tayrona/Tairona culture. This culture was located in northeastern Colombia on the coast of the Caribbean sea. This culture made some simply amazing gold work, pottery, and less seen super beads. If you do a search on Tairona culture beads and then look at the images you will be amazed.

One of the finest ancient stone beads I have ever seen is a Tairona bead that is in book Collectable Beads by Robert Liu.

Here is the first of a few pretty darn nice Tairona beads for your enjoyment. This bead is made of Quartz and being shot with the white background it does not show the transparency all well as I wish. If you see this bead in person its pretty amazing.

Bead size 29mm long 15.7mm in diameter

All my best ............ Danny

Here is my favorite bead from a collection of Peruvian and Columbian beads I acquired many years ago. It is made of shell (I think) and looks like a dog with a human face. It's about 1/2" long.

I have been collecting Pre Columbian beads for 30+ (40+ oh no) years and many pieces are
unphotographed. I'm not sure if I will have some time to take new photos, but I have several
old ones that I can post if I remember my rusty re-sizing skills. Some of the Tairona beads have been posted here.

Terry,
I don’t usually say this but I am somewhat jealous!! I should have been buying more years ago but as they say better late than never.

I thank you very much for posting these wonderful beads. I am near the bottom of the learning curve and these helps greatly.

All my best ............. Danny

I see that the resolution on the re-sized photos has not been good. The bird necklace was
also difficult to photograph for detail.

This necklace has been posted before, but I have changed several of the beads. It includes
two Tairona frogs and three Tairona birds and some Pre-Columbian green stone and crystal
beads.

Thanks for the picture of Pre-Columbian beads.
I have been very interesting and surprising.
Some of these beads are look like the beads found in Southeast Asia, but may differ in raw material.
These similarities are interesting to study because they are located in different regions and continents apart.

Thank You again,
Mor
