Some of the markets are really specialized in one item or another. The Vernaison market still has stalls with house clearance contents, some specialize in Japanese prints, or in textile, but there is not a particular theme for the whole market, as is the case with some of the other markets. Here in the Vernaison I found 2 stalls with quite some beads, and just about in every 5 stalls you find some strands and jewellery, but most is overpriced.
It is here you find the bead stall in allée 1, stand 6 of Lily and Daniel. You'll recognize the stall from Floor's report.
Lots of beads, French beads and more contemporary plastic beads, I only saw a couple of trade beads strands which Lily just had purchased, so it is more a rarity to find those there.

Here is Lilly in her shop, allée 1, stand 6.
The strands she just acquired: flat ended blue 'masai' beads, king beads, some Indian beads,...

Still at Lily's stand. Prices of the majority of beads was 16€/cup as you can see on the second picture. At the back of her shop she had some more expensive ones at 20+/cup, and some beads you could buy/piece: Venetian, Indian...

In the same allée you find some more recent beads - the type I can find over here as well. The puppet's glass eyes though were a treat - bottom left.

Across the rue des Rosiers you find the more up-market marché Dauphine. Lily and Daniel have a bigger bead/jewellery shop nr 128, featuring quite a lot of 40's and 50's jewellery. You just get into the market and at about the centre you find a flying saucer, and there abouts is the shop

When I walked into the shop there were quite some Japanese clients, one of them buying more Chanel-like necklaces and deducing from the whole set-up it must 've been expensive.
After I had taken some pictures outside, I was warned off. I have no idea why, since het beads for sale were coloured wooden beads at a clearance price.
Oops : the pictures got lost. I'll send them again

There were quite some buttons for sale, but could not take any close-ups. I had been 'caught' by then.
These are the last ones from the puces. I had to catch my train.

Martine, Thank you for all of this information. May I ask: Exactly where did you run across the unusual blue chalcedony mentioned in an earlier thread? If the beads appear to be ancient, believe that one of my customers would have lost sleep over it. Are the beads pebble shaped? Wish I were there. Bonne journée!,

Hi Fred,
I just finished my last post below and it seems I anticipated your question.
The best strand was not pebbled shaped, there was a more recent necklace available that was pebble shaped, but I did not even give it a glance, so I can't tell you more about it- not even the price.

when I say they were not pebble shaped beads, then I was thinking of the big obvious pebble shapes like my new ones I showed on the previous posts.
They definitely were not perfect round beads, but roundish, yet not big bold pebbles....
and I have to admit that the picture is becoming vague - I have memory problems.
Is your client in the possibility to go and see the necklace in real? They have a facebook page where you don't really see what they have. It contains mainly pictures from Vogue shootings with some of their necklaces, but it might be a way to contact them (see also their tel.). https://www.facebook.com/pages/Galerie-Argiles/204137756269136

If you are looking for good 'ethnic'/old jewels, there aren't that many addresses left. I only know of some in the 6ième arrondissement. And the 6ième says it all: you pay the price. In the triangle rue de Seine, rue Mazarine and its side Streets and Boulevard St-Germain you find quite a lot of galeries with ethnic art, mainly African. Here and there you find some ethnic jewels as well. I found a small shop in the rue Mazarine,I think it was called 'l' Asie animiste' that had some pricy old Ladakh turquoise and some Tibetan amulet necklaces. The shop owner said these were her last necklaces she brought back herself in the eighties and that it was very difficult to find quality items nowadays. In the rue Guégénaud you find 'galerie Argiles' where I got the shivers and the adrenaline peak: steep prices and some good ancient necklaces from an old collection: chalcedony, etched agate, turquoise, ... There were also strands of lesser quality.
And no, I did not spend a penny.
If any of you ever go there, please let me know of your findings. So far my secret addresses and the end of this Paris tour.

The traditional closing holiday time in France (and Italy) has been August since ever. Even the night watchers would go so to speak. In the past 15 years business and industry had to deal with the European and global partners who request more flexibility.
But when it comes to small businesses/ galeries, they more likely will still follow tradtion and close in August.

Thank you, Martine, for sharing this! I hadn't realized the Paris Flea Market is actually a collection of many markets. It would take more than a day to pass quickly through them. What fun!
