I know what you mean. Although the ornaments may be new, the culture of the very rich traders in Tibetan owning and wearing massive amounts of jewels goes back centuries. Apparently wearing vast amounts of jewels used by be a daily thing for some wives, whereas now these volumes of jewels are only work one or two festival days a year, plus on the wedding day

Remember that these people are from a traditionally nomadic culture, for centuries they have put the majority of their wealth in jewelry, the most suitable (portable) thing they could invest in for their mobile lifestyle
