Hi Chris,
Your beads have tapered holes due to the method of manufacture. They were molded from glass using tongs with a tapered pin to form the hole. The taper allows the pin to be easily released. I'm sure some other will jump in here and explain more. Floor has some pictures of the old tongs used to make glass beads for example.
