I use a scanner for all my pictures. The trick Thomas described of imaging with the cover off and in a low light room works real well.
The only issue is if the glass is not real clean or scratch free it shows up.
Currently I am using a Epson Perfection V33 for my scanner.

Nuance PaperPort for my imaging software and DzSoft Quick Image Resizer to resize my pictures as needed.
