Original Message:   What Are These?

The striped beads with the spiral cores, that appear to be rolled up - does anyone know anything about them? They came on a string of beads from Africa, but which country I cannot recall, and the strand was disassembled years ago. Under magnification the black glass appears a very strange translucent charcoal gray, with an odd greasy look, as if it were petroleum jelly or something.
