Did you do the "Tooth test" to see if the beads feel a bit gritty? And you are correct, knots are tied between valuable beads such a pearls to keep them from scattering all over the floor if the string breaks. The knots also protect the beads from grinding against each other - pearls can be damaged if they're strung tightly together without knots.
