In this side view you can see how Hanuman is decked out like a prince with bangles around his arms, a necklace and a crown and flowers in his hair. I think he was so popular as a folk hero, because he straddled the world between gods, humans and animals, so he could get away with the kind of behaviour that would have been frowned on by conventional moralists.
